The p-Type Doping of ZnO: Mirage or Reality?
2015
This chapter deals with a critical review on p-type doping of ZnO. In the past 15 years, ZnO has attracted considerable attention due to its unique properties, which make it a promising material for optoelectronic devices applications. However, a reliable p-type ZnO doping remains a major challenge because of self-compensation effects; thus, despite the advantages of these devices, the fabrication of ZnO-based devices is hampered by the lack of a stable p-type doping. A careful and critical analysis of the results reported in literature raises many doubts about the correctness of the doping-type assignments and, in general, the values of the electrical parameters reported. A historical surv…
Biologically inspired information processing and synchronization in ensembles of non-identical threshold-potential nanostructures.
2013
Nanotechnology produces basic structures that show a significant variability in their individual physical properties. This experimental fact may constitute a serious limitation for most applications requiring nominally identical building blocks. On the other hand, biological diversity is found in most natural systems. We show that reliable information processing can be achieved with heterogeneous groups of non-identical nanostructures by using some conceptual schemes characteristic of biological networks (diversity, frequency-based signal processing, rate and rank order coding, and synchronization). To this end, we simulate the integrated response of an ensemble of single-electron transisto…
A crystalline radical cation derived from Thiele’s hydrocarbon with redox range beyond 1 V
2021
Thiele’s hydrocarbon occupies a central role as an open-shell platform for new organic materials, however little is known about its redox behaviour. While recent synthetic approaches involving symmetrical carbene substitution of the CPh2 termini yield isolable neutral/dicationic analogues, the intervening radical cations are much more difficult to isolate, due to narrow compatible redox ranges (typically 1 V), permitting its isolation in crystalline form. Further single-electron oxidation affords borenium dication 12+, thereby establishing an organoboron redox system fully characterized in all three redox states. We perceive that this strategy can be extended to other transient organic rad…
Using Electronic Materials in the EFL Classroom: 8th Graders’ Views on the Motivational Aspect of E-materials
2018
Tuning Charge Carrier Dynamics and Surface Passivation in Organolead Halide Perovskites with Capping Ligands and Metal Oxide Interfaces
2018
Organolead halide perovskites have emerged as exciting optoelectronic materials but a complete understanding of their photophysical properties is still lacking. Here, a morphological series of methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr 3 ) perovskites are studied by transient optical spectroscopies over eight orders of magnitude in timescale to investigate the effect of nanostructuring and surface states on the charge carrier dynamics. The sample preparation route and corresponding morphology changes influence the position of the optical features, recombination dynamics, excitation fluence dependence, and dramatically impact surface trap passivation. Growth of the perovskite layer in the presence …

Stabilization of polyiodide networks with Cu(ii) complexes of small methylated polyazacyclophanes: shifting directional control from H-bonds to I⋯I i…
2020
Ordered polyiodide networks have recently gathered considerable attention as electronic materials, a topic historically dominated by metals. Could we incorporate metal cations into polyiodide frameworks in a controlled manner to simultaneously boost electronic properties and robustness of these materials? Herein we present a first principles study featuring three analogous polyazacyclophanes (L, L-Me, L-Me3), differing only in the extent of N-methylation. We demonstrate (potentiometry, ITC) how they all form the same CuL2+ (L = L, L-Me, L-Me3) complex as prevalent species in solution, so that a level playing field exists where only N-methylation distinguishes them. Then we use them as count…
